I truly enjoy this because it explores the association of immigrant communities and the expansion and impact of activism in them on their countries of origin. Though another reviewer has said the premise is false, they failed to provide scholarly research at the time of the review to back up their claims. Simply put, I am letting the work stand as it is and reviewing the materials for myself for accuracy and testing the theories presented. Dr. Chang has presented primary documentation that was not available to people studying the development of Korean democracy in the past, making this work timely, relevant, and intensely interesting!

Extremely Poor Research with False Claims

Pachappa Camp is based on revised facts and historically exaggerated accounts of early Korean people of the Pioneer Generation in America. The claim Riverside is the first Koreatown is absurd. Ahn Chang Ho initiated the Korean Labor Bureau in San Francisco before Riverside. According to Pachappa Camp referenced author Lee Sun Ju who wrote about Riverside in 2003 claims Ahn Chang Ho established Mutual Association in nearby Redlands, CA before Riverside. Ahn Chang Ho's family did not live in Riverside for most of the period Chang claims. Ahn's first son famous actor Philip Ahn was born in Los Angeles in 1905 not in Riverside as claimed. At no time was there a 1000 Koreans in Riverside. This book discounts the development of "democracy' in Korea where Ahn Chang Ho studied it under the Presbyterian Mission and Soh Jae Pil's Independence Club in Korea in 1896. These are just a few problems. If this was an essay fr a history class the grade would be an F. Don't buy it and don't use the bad information plaguing this book.
