Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in northeastern China is sometimes described as the “Third Korea” because of its large ethnic Korean population and strong Korean cultural identity.
Around 2 million ethnic Koreans live in China, with a significant concentration in Yanbian. The community largely descends from Koreans who migrated to the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Korean and Chinese are both widely used, with bilingual schools, Korean-language media, cultural institutions, and street signs in both languages.
Despite being part of China, Yanbian has retained many aspects of Korean culture, including its language, cuisine, festivals, and traditions.

I think that the proportion of ethnic Korean population in Yanji is actually below 42% now, due to large-scale out-migration, both to South Korea and lots of other places, including major Chinese cities. Otherwise, Yanbian Korean diaspora is global, and includes tens of thousands Yanbian Koreans in USA, Japan and Europe. They have a strong separate identity, like Koryo Saram, and do not easily mix up with either South or North Koreans.

The last official population figures that have been published for Yanbian are from 2022, and here they state that the proportion of Korean-Chinese in Yanbian is at 35.5%. But when you visit, you will realize that it is far below this figure and is likely around the 20-25% mark.

Jerome de Wit I really want to visit there! I am so curious about what happened to the places like 광명중학교 where 조승복 once studied….
