We Will Not Be Silenced: The Academic Repression of Israel's Critics Kindle Edition
by William I Robinson (Editor), & 2 more Format: Kindle Edition
5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars (7)
As criticism continues to mount over Israel's violation of Palestinian human rights and of international law, campaigns to silence and repress those who speak out against Israeli apartheid have grown alarmingly.
College and university campuses across the United States now find themselves centre stage in this conflict over free speech: targeted by the Israel 'lobby' for the critical content of their scholarship, academics have been turned away from jobs, denied tenure and promotion, rejected for funding, and even expelled from institutions, while student groups like the 'Irvine 11' have faced harassment and sanctions.
From establishment figures like Richard Falk and former US Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, to professors, postgraduates and activist alumni, We Will Not Be Silenced contains thirteen testimonials from those whose struggle to defend their academic freedom has garnered widespread public and international attention.

Review
'It is perhaps no surprise that as Israel drifts towards repression and reaction within, and becomes increasingly isolated internationally as a result of the harsh and criminal occupation, its informal lobby in the US becomes more desperate to stifle free and open discussion of the state they seek to protect. Efforts of the kind sampled here, targeting the academic world, are as deplorable as they are predictable, and should be dismissed with contempt, and strongly opposed.' -- Noam Chomsky 'These testimonials provide a stunning and all too familiar portrait of the extent to which the forces that suppress free speech and academic freedom are at work in the U.S. university system' -- Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate The insightful and captivating testimonials in this book are ... not just about challenging the 'Israel exception to free speech'; they are also about protecting civil liberties and democratic rights at large against the ominous rise of McCarthyism 2.0. -- Omar Barghouti, Scholar and Co-founder of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement (BDS) and the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI)

As an initially neutral observer who is horrified by Israel's Zionist expansion at whoever else's expense, even when that spells their demise or slavery, by their conspiratorial control over the minds of US politicians who consistently do their bidding, and most of all, by their abject cruelty and willful negation of the rights and aspirations of Palestinians, whom they look upon only as intractable opposers, I found this anthology of accounts by some of the many academicians in the US who have suffered repression of their First Amendment rights and academic freedom at the hands of Israel-supported NGO's informative and hopeful. The pro-Israel organizations' unwillingness to ever debate or discuss issues raised by their opposition on the merits, and twisting, misstatement, and at times downright fabrication of their target's words and records, the targets generally being any academician with a Middle Eastern name or ties, regardless of teaching field, and Jewish so-called "self-hating Jews" because they oppose Israel's ruthless tactics and outrgeously disproportionate violence used to oppress Palestinians in their own land, are appalling. Lives careers of honestly-testifying individuals are ruined and altered for the sake of protecting internationally condemned and illegal behavior by a nation that cannot live by the ethics and empathy it demands of others. The gamut of accounts in this book make it a valuable resource, a brave testimony to our blindness as Americans to the capacity of our "allies" for criminal acts and a corrective to the barrage of disinformation our media spews forth daily to protect Israel with a cloak of impunity. My hope is that these eloquent testimonies will be read and taken to heart by millions.

5 out of 5 starsAmazing accounts of the systematic repression taking place today in US academia

This book is a collection of well researched cases of systematic repression of academics for their anti-zionist views. It includes testimonials from many different professors who were employees at some of the top academic institutions in the U.S. and how they were punished after criticizing Israeli politics. It is chilling, but very well written and researched.

Some testimonials were really compelling, others felt like whining. I think that has more to do with watching the ongoing destruction of Gaza and unfairly comparing the two. I also found it a bit hypocritical to put down the idea of requiring balanced perspectives for every single event in one testimonial and then have that followed with quite a few that question a lack of balance in perspective. I ultimately walk away not knowing which the editors of this collection thinks is better. I'm on the side that doesn't believe balance is necessary every time a speaker is invited to campus-- it's a ludicrous idea that I've never heard applied to any other lecture topic.
I do find it really interesting that nearly all the testimonials come out of California or New York. I'm curious to know why a wider geographic range wasn't represented.
Regardless, I think this book shines a strong light on how pro-Israeli-state organizations attempt to intimidate and lock down anyone they view as even remotely pro-Palestinian.

Strong essay collection. Presents a diversity of views within the pro-Palestine camp.
Read earlier this year so may be forgetting significant impressions. Rating 4 stars because the topic is important to me and I remember enjoying that it was academic, thoughtful writing.
