In case you were wondering what today’s procession in Adelaide was about:
The procession is about “love and peace.” It was the local Shia Muslim community’s annual Ashura procession, held to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala. For Shia Muslims, it is the most significant day of mourning. It commemorates the death of Imam Husayn ibn Ali (often spelled Hussein or Hussain), who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq. his took place in the 7th century, specifically in the year 680 in early medieval history,
It happened during the early Islamic period, only a few decades after the death of the Prophet Muhammad The Islamic world was under the rule of the Umayyad Caliphate.
• The ruling caliph was Yazid I.
• The political system had shifted from earlier leadership models after the Prophet’s companions, leading to major disputes over legitimacy and governance.
According to Islamic tradition, Hussain refused to pledge allegiance to the Umayyad caliph Yazid I because he believed Yazid’s rule was unjust. Hussain and a small group of family members and supporters were surrounded, denied access to water, and ultimately killed. For many Muslims, especially Shia Muslims, his stand symbolizes moral courage, sacrifice, and resistance against oppression
This marked the 16th annual Ashura march in Adelaide, beginning at Victoria Square and concluding near the Adelaide O-Bahn. For participants, the procession is a religious observance and a public expression of peace, freedom, remembrance, and opposition to oppression and tyranny.
Ashura processions vary around the world but often include:
• Walking together in remembrance.
• Religious recitations and sermons.
• Mourning rituals.
• Charitable activities, including food and blood donation drives in some communities.
• Messages promoting justice, compassion, peace, and standing against oppression and tyranny.
Imam Hussain’s respect in Islamic tradition mainly comes from a combination of his actions at Karbala and his character throughout his life not just one moment.
Here are the key reasons he is so highly respected:
1. He refused to legitimize injustice
He did not accept the rule of Yazid I because, in his view, Yazid’s leadership represented corruption and abuse of power. Husayn believed that giving allegiance would mean endorsing injustice.
2. He stood even when he was vastly outnumbered
At the Battle of Karbala, he was with a small group of family and companions facing a much larger army. Despite knowing the likely outcome, he did not back down.
3. He protected principles over personal safety
He had opportunities to avoid confrontation, but chose not to compromise what he saw as moral truth, even when it meant extreme personal cost, including the loss of his life and the lives of close family members.
4. His treatment of others was deeply compassionate
Historical accounts describe him as:
• generous to the poor
• respectful even to opponents
• protective of women, children, and vulnerable people
• committed to ethical conduct even in conflict
5. He is seen as a symbol of resistance to oppression and tyranny
Across centuries, his stand has been interpreted as a universal message: that it is better to resist oppression than to accept it silently. That’s why his story is often referenced beyond religion in discussions about justice, human rights, and moral courage.
Why people still respect him today
For Shia Muslims especially, he represents:
• sacrifice for truth
• refusal to submit to corruption
• dignity in the face of suffering
Even many non-Muslim historians and observers view Karbala as one of history’s most powerful examples of principled resistance.
In Australia, these processions are peaceful public events intended both as religious observances and opportunities to explain the significance of Ashura to the wider community
Interesting fact: South Australia made history in 1836 by becoming the first place in the world to legally guarantee freedom of religion for all people. Unlike many other colonies at the time, it welcomed people of different faiths and allowed them to practise their religion without persecution.

We shia muslims have been doing this for 18 years here in Australia.
We actually do this behind closed doors but
Once a year for two bloody hours we come out and remember IMAM HUSSEIN, a person who died fighting for freedom and died fighting oppression.
Nelson Mandala and the Dalai Lama took inspiration from imam Hussein and spoke how he made them who they are. (Which you can look into)
We give out free food and drinks to everyone in the love of imam Hussein. We also feed the poor and the needy.
We are law abiding citizens who some of us have been here for 30,50 and even 70 years.
We do this with the permission of the government and police.
Its sad to see only muslims being targeted but dont hear a single word when its Chinese new year, Divali, Hanukkah, Holi or lunar new year.
Please Stop the hate. We all bleed the same and we can all learn from one another.

I have many good ethnic friends but it’s always the same outcome, they look after their own first. Australia 🇦🇺 must do the same. We have had a kind heart and given refuge because we did not consider any future deceit or disrespect in our own country from those we thought we were helping.
Thing now must be reconsidered and must be changed immediately

I’m not blaming people wanting to come here I’m blaming the government allowing so many without consultation with the people of Australia with a housing shortage and little to no screening allowing criminals and other undesirable people into our country. Now if you like the crime rate rise , rapes , machete attacks , social security numbers ( paid for with your taxes ) longer wait times for doctors, hospitals and police response times that says a lot about you. But me I don’t and by the look the vast majority don’t like it either
