Victor Deneulin puts pressure on Antoine to encourage his colleagues to go back down to the mine. Furious, the strikers go to the Jean Bart pit, where activity has resumed, attack the installations and those they consider traitors to the cause.

After the dramatic confrontation between the gendarmes and the miners, the latter are divided. Some, believing they have nothing more to lose, are of the opinion to go even further in violence and to take revenge by killing Bressan. Others, like Etienne, plead for the measure, while waiting to have instructions from Pluchart, representative of the Workers' International. Souvarine is ready to do anything to prevent a return to work.

In Montsou, the miners work hard and are not spared from accidents which are sometimes fatal to them. Etienne Lantier, in his twenties, arrives from Lille to try to be forgotten after incidents. He was hired at the mine and discovered harsh working conditions there. The new is not insensitive to the charms of Catherine, also coveted by Chaval. Maheude struggles to feed the 10 members of her family who live under her roof.
