A Marine platoon of 45 men is ordered to hold a mountain pass near Wosan early in the Korean War, when Chinese Communists were swarming all over MacArthur's tiny army. Quinlivan is mortally wounded and hands over his command to Towler (Sidney Poitier), a novice sergeant, which angers most of the men since Kincaid (Alan Ladd) is the most exper …

Sidney Poitier what a gift actor, everyone loves his movies and the films he was able to get parts in like this classic film. He will live forever in our hearts.

Love Sidney Poitier, what a guy.....4:29  The opening ambush scene is very realistic. I am a trained mortar gunner in the Marines. The realistic way the mortar impacts send you flying is real. The air displacement of the explosion is invisible. A real mortar explosion that close would knock you down. I got blown up by a short round from my 81mm mortar. I was sent flying backwards, my helmet flew away and the tent pole of the CP tent 50 yards behind me rang like a bango string for a full minute due to shrapnel hits. I don't how I survived, the line of explosion went right past me before anything hit the center tent pole. I remember wind and dirt as I flew backwards and landed on my back. I am very fortunate. This scene gave me cold sweat and flashbacks.

James Darren (Pvt Cotton)was a  sucessful singer as well as an actor. Mort Sahl (Pvt Crane) was better known as a comedien and social satirist. Ingemar Johansson (Pvt Torgil) was Swedish boxer and onetime Heavyweight World Champion.

I remember when Ingemar Johansen fought Floyd Patterson for the heavy weight title. I was 12 years old and we listened to it on the radio. This was when boxers were gentlemen unlike the loudmouths of today.

I don’t understand why Kincaid was so angry with Towler, he told the Lt that Kincaid should be in command but he ordered Towler to take command and Towler told Kincaid that he should have been in command and that he needed his help, but Kincaid still had a go at him, absolutely ridiculous.

A long time ago, I found a book titled "Blacks in the Marine Corps Study" that was made in 1975.  I was interested in it because unlike the other services that were slowly integrating their segregated units, the Marine Corps did it all at once because there were too few black marines to justify keeping a separate unit for them.  So I was wondering how it played out in the Korean War.  It didn't give too much information on that, mostly talking about the Monford Point Marines of WWII and the Vietnam War.  So I was still looking for information on that.  I had never heard about this film, so I was very glad to see it here.

Not a war movie fan, being a believer in Non Violent Direct Action.  Too many  young lives wasted & too many of these movies are just propoganda pieces.  So I passed on this as a child and at 84 I pass on it again.
