First there was Girt. Now comes ...
True Girt
In this side-splitting sequel to his best-selling history, David Hunt transports us to the Australian frontier.
This was the Wild South, home to hardy pioneers, gun-slinging bushrangers, directionally challenged explorers, nervous Indigenous people, Caroline Chisholm and sheep. Lots of sheep.
True Girt introduces Thomas Davey, the hard-drinking Tasmanian governor who invented the Blow My Skull cocktail, and Captain Moonlite, Australia’s most notorious LGBTI bushranger. Meet William Nicholson, the Melbourne hipster who gave Australia the steam-powered coffee roaster and the world the secret ballot. And say hello to Harry, the first camel used in Australian exploration, who shot dead his owner, the adventurer John Horrocks.
Learn how Truganini’s death inspired the Martian invasion of Earth. Discover the role of Hall and Oates in the Myall Creek Massacre. And be reminded why you should never ever smoke with the Wild Colonial Boy and Mad Dan Morgan.
If Manning Clark and Bill Bryson were left on a desert island with only one pen, they would write True Girt.

As above. As above. As above. As above.
Sorry for the repeats, but Amazon apparently needs at least 20 words.

4.0 out of 5 stars A mostly satisfying sequel/follow on to GIRTReviewed in Australia ๐ฆ๐บ on 4 January 2021

If only we were taught Australian history 60 years ago using David Hunts wicked sense of satire. Subjects which bored me witless many years ago had me crying with laughter but feeling as though I was also learning so much.
The FOOTNOTES should win a literary prize in their own right- they are hilarious. Reading my kindle on the train one day other passengers shifted uncomfortably as I laughed out loud and chuckled madly.
True Girt was probably a little too long - seemed to drill down into more detail than Girt but it is a must read nevertheless. MORE PLEASE DAVID HUNT

If you have any interest in or feel proud of Australia this is a factual and interesting way of learning about Australia.
The way David has written this book is like an easy to read novel that paints a picture, and yet it is our true history with colourful characters, ever changing landscape and lots of action on every page!
I recommend this series especially for young adults, to learn about how our nation came to be , and what came before....

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read, almost as good has Book 1!Reviewed in Australia ๐ฆ๐บ on 27 December 2019

Although nothing can beat "Girt", David Hunt has come up with a fantastic sequel that is so entertaining and informative that I just wish history books were like this at school. Some of the tales are horrendous and they certainly keep any feelings of national pride in sharp perspective! The best feature of the whole shameful story is that it would prevent runaway patriotism. It should be compulsory reading in school, although that would spoil it.

Excellent and informative read, amusing and fun. Having read Girt on visiting Tassie that impressed I moved onto True Girt which related more specifically to the surroundings. Gave insights into some of the historical views from a less colonial bent and references very helpful for further reading on my return to the Isle of Man.

We are, in all societies and school systems, fed to some extent, upon mythologized national histories. Hunt undermines so many myths that True Girt should be required reading for all Australians.
