In a flashforward,[15] Cara Dutton is hunting down a man running away with a six-gun in his hand. After pleading for mercy, he attempts to shoot her, but she double barrels him at point blank range. A few months earlier on the other-side of the world, her nephew Spencer is shown stalking a man-eating lion in Africa. When the lion decides to rush him from the thicket, Dutton waits until the lion pounces into the air at him before discharging his rifle, killing the lion instantly. Back at the Yellowstone ranch, Jacob Dutton encounters problems with sheep ranchers who wish to trespass on his land to feed their starving herds of sheep. Jacob is reluctant to allow this, as sheep have a tendency to eat grass with the roots leaving empty plots of land in which the grass will not be able to grow back to feed his own livestock. At the conclusion, one of the sheep herders takes aims at Jack Dutton while the herder's sheep are feeding on Dutton's land and fires a single shot from the distance.
2 | "Nature's Empty Throne" | Ben Richardson | Taylor Sheridan | December 25, 2022
Jacob and the Yellowstone cowboys save one of their own before deciding their next move. Teonna continues to endure mistreatment and corporal punishment at the hands of Sister Mary. Cara and Emma discuss Elizabeth and Jack. Meanwhile in Kenya, Spencer kills two leopards after barely surviving a leopard attack in which two people were killed and partially eaten. Faced with the prospects of a possible future of a loveless marriage while on a journey of a lifetime visiting Britain's colonial outposts, Alexandra makes a bold decision.
3 | "The War Has Come Home" | Ben Richardson | Taylor Sheridan | January 1, 2023
One of the sheep farmers survives being hanged as part of range war justice being enacted by Jacob Dutton while the others are hanged from a large tree in the clearing. The cowboys return home and Jacob takes everyone to town for recreation while he speaks to the sheriff about the sheep farmers shooting his grand nephew's horse from under him, and his decision for the range justice hangings afterword. While in town, the cowboys go to a basement speakeasy in town to enjoy a good time, and some of them made for serious time afterwards with their girlfriends. Jacob and the cowboys stay the night in town and start back to the ranch the next day. In the meantime, the sole survivor of the lynching party manages to stumble his way back home and makes a call to all the surviving local sheep farmers to meet and plot a revenge against Jacob for hanging several of their fellow sheep farmers. They decide to lay an extensive and fully armed rifle ambush while hidden in the forest on the path which Jacob and his family will take to get home to the ranch after their trip to the city. The ambush is brutally successful in attacking the Dutton family and their ranch hands with multiple mortal casualties. The head of the sheep herders shows up with a tommy gun and opens up directly on Jacob Dutton and his family within effective killing range. Jacob is hit multiple times in the abdomen and is taken back to the ranch, and a doctor is called. When the doctor arrives, it looks bad for Jacob and the others who were injured. Cara decides its time to write a letter to Africa to let her nephew know that his brother is dead, his uncle is near death's door and that it might be time for him to return home help defend their ranch from outsiders.
4 | "War and the Turquoise Tide" | Ben Richardson | Taylor Sheridan | January 8, 2023
The result of the rifle ambush by the sheep farmers is severe, but Jacob's cowboys mount a counterattack on horseback which is devastating in effect. The sheep farmers also killed the cowboys guarding the cattle left to graze in the mountains and sell the stolen cattle in Wyoming. Jacob survives the night at home laying disabled on his bedroom bed; he tells Cara that she must represent him at the local weekly meeting of cattle owners to make his case for required increases in security throughout the territory. Cara goes and effectively convinces the cattlemen to agree to Dutton's plan and schedules the next meeting of the cattlemen for one month away. She wishes to buy time for Jacob to recover and for her nephew to show up for the coming range war. The sheep farmers go to meet with a local mining tycoon in order to get money and hire guns to support their war against the Dutton family by offering to sell the mineral rights under the Dutton Ranch after they take the land away from the Duttons. They are required to swear a blood oath upon their families that if they fail or are disloyal to the mining magnate, that the consequences will be severe and mortal for both them and for their families. After incessant abuse from sister Mary, Teonna kills her in her bed via suffocation, while declaring war in her native language. Teonna then flees the school. Cara's letter reaches Africa after ninety days, and her nephew is deeply involved with his fiancée when he receives the notification that there is a range war in progress and that his help is desperately required.

Crossovers[edit]
Both prequel shows are narrated by Isabel May, who in the 1883 series played Elsa, the daughter of James and Margaret Dutton.[16][17] May is the only actor who has main cast credits on both prequel shows.
Although portrayed by different actors, the only character that appears on screen in both prequel shows is John Dutton Sr.
Production[edit]
Development[edit]
It was announced in February 2022 that a second Yellowstone prequel series had been ordered titled 1932 that would succeed the series 1883.[18]
In June, the title was renamed to 1923.[19]
In December 2022, Sheridan explained "No one has had the freedom I’ve had since Robert Evans ran Paramount," and discussed the 1923 production cost: "I would argue that 1883 was the most expensive first season of a TV show ever made. This was much more expensive. Much more expensive."[20]
Casting[edit]
In May, Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford were cast to star in the series.[21]
In a Deadline interview, Sheridan explained he got Ford to fly down in his own plane to Sheridan's ranch, and told him "[the script] ain’t written yet and you got to commit to it now. I need to know who I’m writing for... I poured about two bottles of wine down him. He said yes." Then Sheridan continued, "Then came Helen [Mirren], and same thing. Have a glass of wine."[20][22]
In September, Sebastian Roché, James Badge Dale, Darren Mann, Marley Shelton, Michelle Randolph, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, and Julia Schlaepfer were added to the cast.[23][2]
Filming[edit]
Pre-production began in Butte, Montana in July 2022,[24] with filming officially beginning on August 22.[25] Principal photography took place across Montana, with many Montana-set scenes shot in the same locations as Yellowstone.[26] Additional scenes were filmed in Kenya, Malta, South Africa, and Tanzania.[27][28]
The show is estimated to cost between $30–35 million per episode.[29]
The series is set to run for two seasons with eight episodes each.[30] The first season was broadcast in two blocks of four episodes each, with a roughly month-long gap in-between episode 4 and 5.
Reception[edit]
On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, 1923 holds a 91% approval rating with an average rating of 7.0/10, based on 32 reviews by critics. The website's consensus reads, "Distinguished by the ineffable star power of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, 1923 is another solid if unrelentingly grim addition to Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe."[31] On Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, the series has received a score of 67 out of 100 based on 15 critic reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[32]
According to Paramount, the debut episode brought in 7.4 million viewers in both linear and streaming telecasts, making it Paramount+'s biggest debut ever.[33][34]
