This film adaptation of Maya Angelou's autobiography focuses on the author's extremely difficult youth. Young Maya (Constance Good) lives at her grandmother's in Arkansas. Life is hard for the little girl, but a truly dark turning point comes when she is raped by her mother's boyfriend (Paul Benjamin). After she identifies her rapist, her uncles murder him. Overwhelmed with guilt and confusion, Maya becomes mute for years, struggling all the while to come to terms with her trauma.

This movie is POWERFUL.  Look what faith in God  can do. Dr. Angelou paved the way through her writings and contributions.  I am from Arkansas.  I even graduated college there. The playing field was not always fair; nevertheless, if you want  something bad enough you will give it EVERYTHING  you've got! As my mother always told me:  "If G-d is for you  -  who can be against you, baby."

This movie is awesome and the sister who is narrating it is so right and so excellent for the film and story. Everything about this movie is great, the acting, the direction, the writing, historical accuracy and the music.

I remember reading the book in high school. It’s very good and just sheds light on what went on back in them days. I watched the movie after reading the book and it just made me fall in love with her story, I love her grandma; strong and how she was her rock and so is her teacher. It really got to me when I first watched it, when she was raped. I was molested as a child twice, once by my cousin and the other by my stepbrother. I’ve watched the movie more than once and when it gets close to that scene I start to clench my fist and when she screams I scream, brings back the memories. All that aside this is a really good movie! I also love the movie The Color Purple.

I’m watching this because I’ve been going through tough times these past years. And, my friend is going through tough times too. We call each other and support each other - words of comfort for each other is all we have. Maya Angelou’s words and work bring me comfort and courage… πŸ™πŸΌ

Just finished the book. I can see why they don't act on some of thr acts written in the story. Specially her need to get Freemans attention thinking he really loved her as a daughter. It's crazy to me to see how the problems that were considered problems then, are still things we deal with today. Racism, rape, abandonment, ignorance, and indifference twords the weak.

There was a waterfall near us, such a lovely thin streak of water, like a thread but white and moving. It fell from a great height, but it looked quite low, and it was half a mile away, though it did not seem fifty paces. I loved to listen to it at night, but it was then that I became so restless. Sometimes I went and climbed the mountain and stood there in the midst of the tall pines, all alone in the terrible silence, with our little village in the distance, and the sky so blue, and the sun so bright, and an old ruined castle on the mountain-side, far away. I used to watch the line where earth and sky met, and longed to go and seek there the key of all mysteries, thinking that I might find there a new life, perhaps some great city where life should be grander and richer--and then it struck me that life may be grand enough even in a prison.

I remember watching this in 6th grade, can't remember if we read the book that year because I've read it several times or if Mrs. Harris just talked to us about Maya Angelou I was surprised to hear this is the most challenged book in schools.
