Six years after vacating his position as the longest-serving Premier of New South Wales, Bob Carr returned to politics in his dream job: as Foreign Minister of Australia and a senior federal cabinet minister.

For 18 months he kept a diary documenting a whirl of high-stakes events on the world stage – the election of Australia to the UN Security Council, the war in Syria and meetings with the most powerful people on the planet. And they all unfold against the gripping, uncertain domestic backdrop of Labor Party infighting, plummeting polls and a leadership change from Gillard back to Rudd.

This compelling diary provides an intimate glimpse into the day-to-day workings of a foreign minister and proves that Carr is not only a master politician and statesman, but a great writer as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a life to lead - he must have travelled ...

What a life to lead - he must have travelled many more miles than most foreign ministers; but he certainly had a very high belief in himself. Is that part of the criteria for the job or just an individual personality quirk? But it was interesting reading. Thankfully he's a bit more out of the picture these days!

Well written book.
Very informative of the day-to-day work of a foreign minister (which you can rarely know) and easy reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, wise, with fascinating insights

This book was controversial in Australia, for reasons that escape me (except perhaps making the current government look decidedly low-brow in comparison with Bob Carr). I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and learned a lot. The fact that many of the key players are still very active in international relations made it even more relevant.

3.0 out of 5 stars Carr is entertaining but overdoes the travel complaints

The first third of this book is a real page turner. But the jokes wear as thin as he thinks we should all be. His knowledge of Foreign Affairs is displayed cleverly, but after the tenth whinge about Business Class, and his obsession with keeping his bony frame in shape, gets tiresome. He had little to complain about - he coveted this job, got it handed to him, did it well and, at all times, had his wife as his companion at taxpayers expense (as he should), but then complained about the sufferings they both endured in the most lavish circumstances.

My knowledge of politics is insufficient to comment on whether Carr broke Cabinet security. I'd like to hear from a constitutional expert on this.

Totally unable to empathise with the logistics and nuances of travel. I don't believe he has shown in his book thathe had the skills required to engage with global representatives at the level necessary.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bob Carr, a man who got what he wanted

You need a reasonable knowledge of international politicians, who is who and where they hang out or you will get lost in the excessive name dropping. However I was surprised to learn what a hard working guy Bob is, also how narcissistic he is, how obsessed he is with his diet and his incomprehensible obsession with Pilates.Cannot pretend it was a riveting read but it did give me a much better understanding of politics in general and an in depth look at the day to day of a Foreign Minister

Welcome to my library.
Dog-eared paperbacks falling to pieces.
Second-hand books from the stores and barrows of four continents.
Modern first editions, some inscribed ...

In My Reading Life, a personal investigation into the nature of democracy, dictatorship, decency and the hardwired human condition, Bob Carr shares his profound love of books and reading - books you've never heard of, books you've always wanted to read, books you will rediscover afresh. Here are the essential clues to devouring Tolstoy, Proust, Flaubert, Solzhenitsyn and the Epic of Gilgamesh.

From the social comedies of Anthony Powell and Patrick White and the tragedies of Sophocles and Shakespeare, to the twentieth century's darkest moment - Auschwitz - powerfully recounted by Primo Levi in If This Is a Man, Carr invites us to discover the most important testaments to the highs and lows of human nature. He discovers, through his great love of the written word, that decency can survive the greatest tests, giving us all cause for hope.
