(Israelism: The awakening of young American Jews)

<Israelism: The awakening of young American Jews (2024)>

  • West Bank

다큐는 이를 “Awakening(각성)”으로 표현한다.

🔷 English

<Condensed but equivalent structure>

This documentary traces how young American Jews are socialized into pro-Israel identity and how some later challenge it.

Core trajectory:

  1. Early indoctrination: Israel as inseparable from Jewish identity

  2. Militarized identity through youth programs

  3. Absence or distortion of Palestinian reality

  4. Cognitive rupture through direct encounters

  5. Moral conflict: loyalty vs universal ethics

  6. Awakening and activism

  7. Social consequences (alienation, conflict)

Critical insight:

The film is less about geopolitics and more about
→ identity formation and moral dissonance.

Strengths:

  • insider critique

  • experiential storytelling

  • generational analysis

Weaknesses:

  • selective voices

  • limited security perspective

  • simplified geopolitics

Overall:

A powerful study of how identity systems are built—and how they break.

🔷 English

A short comment on this documentary often risks reducing it to “anti-Israel criticism.” This misses the core: the film is fundamentally about identity formation and moral rupture. If the comment ignores this, it flattens a complex internal struggle into a political stance. Moreover, overly moralistic or emotional framing can obscure the film’s deeper insight—how institutional narratives shape perception. A more accurate reading should engage with its sociological dimension rather than treating it as simple advocacy.

Israelism: The awakening of young American Jews | Featured Documentary
Al Jazeera English Oct 25, 2024

When two young American Jews raised to support Israel unconditionally witness the way Israel treats Palestinians, it changes their lives. They join a movement of young American Jews campaigning to redefine Judaism’s relationship with Israel and reveal a deepening generational divide over modern Jewish identity. Israelism sparked huge debate on American campuses even before the events of October 7, 2023.

It follows Simone Zimmerman, who visited Israel as a teenager, and Eitan who joined the Israeli army after graduating from high school as they discover the reality for Palestinians and radically revise their views. It includes interviews with academics and political activists, including Noam Chomsky, Cornel West, Lara Friedman and a former director of the Anti-Defamation League, Abe Foxman.

Contributors suggest the narrative that young American Jews are fed almost entirely erases the existence of the Palestinians through education and advocacy, sometimes involving groups that organise free trips to Israel partially funded by the Israeli government.

This film describes how influential this narrative is in shaping attitudes to Israel, not just in the United States but across the world.

15:2715 minutes, 27 secondspeople I the director of Engagement and programs here at Hill L and this campus happens to be very proactive for Israel
15:3615 minutes, 36 secondsa lot of people are very passionate a lot of people love Israel and there's a lot of advocacy here on campus in lots of different ways lots of different
15:4315 minutes, 43 secondsgroups how did you become involved in advocacy for Israel I kind of came to H just cuz I was new in campus I didn't
15:5115 minutes, 51 secondsreally know where to go and I really did find a lot of friends here I came here on and off but then when I went on the
15:5815 minutes, 58 secondsbirthright trip and kind of got to know the staff Tom and Jackie a lot better got to know people at h a lot better and just got to know Israel a lot better I
16:0616 minutes, 6 secondscame back and I knew that I wanted to put a lot more of myself into H the Jewish community on campus and just Israel advocacy in General on birth
16:1516 minutes, 15 secondsright we had Israeli Soldiers with us throughout the entire trip you learn so much and you learn the reason that they
16:2216 minutes, 22 secondsserve it's just a feeling that I don't think any of us could ever imagine except for
16:2916 minutes, 29 secondsmy job is doing Israel program on campus and that relates to a Jewish events cultural or political um sorry Israel
16:3716 minutes, 37 secondsevents uh uh cultural political I would say name a university in America we probably have a person
16:4516 minutes, 45 secondsthere I like to talk about the Army a lot because that's an experience that I lived through and I have a lot of personal
16:5416 minutes, 54 secondsstories there a couple students who said yeah I'm I'm thinking about joining uh the idea one day so my first thing is
17:0017 minutessaying them are you sure because uh it's not an easy it's not an easy decision
17:0817 minutes, 8 secondsthat being said it will probably end up being the most meaningful experience that you ever go through you're going to
17:1517 minutes, 15 secondstell your kids stories about it uh yeah one of our former young emissaries
17:2317 minutes, 23 secondsjust graduated into the air force I that's the greatest gift you can give you know and and we actually have
17:3017 minutes, 30 secondshad quite a few of our former students joined the IDF amazing I mean just amazing it's these are kids these are 18 19y old it's
17:4017 minutes, 40 secondslike something I've dreamed about doing since I was 7 years old you have like a you find your sense of purpose all my friends are so proud of me and they understand that this is something that
17:4817 minutes, 48 secondslike I have to
17:4917 minutes, 49 seconds[Music]
17:5017 minutes, 50 secondsdo almost 10% of my graduating class at my Jewish High School joined the Israeli
17:5717 minutes, 57 secondsArmy and I had many friends from my summer camp and youth group who join the Army as
18:0718 minutes, 7 secondswell part of becoming part of Israeli Society is to join the military when I was in high school I
18:1518 minutes, 15 secondstold my parents I don't even need to apply to college because I'm going to just join the Israeli military and make
18:2218 minutes, 22 secondsalyah and live in Israel I honestly I've felt for many
18:2918 minutes, 29 secondsyears that I fit in better in Israeli Society than I do in American society even before I moved there and I wanted
18:3718 minutes, 37 secondsto defend what I saw as my country so when I enlisted I was a Mist
18:4618 minutes, 46 secondswhich is a a heavy machine gunst during my basic and Advanced Training and then they put me on a light machine gun
18:5918 minutes, 59 secondswe were training for war training for strategy to conquer
19:0519 minutes, 5 secondshilltops and Conquer Open Spaces one week was focused on Urban Warfare in
19:1319 minutes, 13 secondsclose quarters and that was simulated in what looked like Arab
19:2019 minutes, 20 secondshousing after the 7 months of our training we were deployed to the West Bank
19:3019 minutes, 30 seconds[Music]
19:3519 minutes, 35 seconds[Music]
19:3919 minutes, 39 secondsour missions included working in two different checkpoints patrolling villages on foot in full gear and
19:4619 minutes, 46 secondsbulletproof vests we would go into apartment buildings go up to the roof and make
19:5419 minutes, 54 secondssure that we could be seen so that we could make our presence
20:0220 minutes, 2 secondsfelt we wanted them to know that we were watching that was the goal of the
20:0920 minutes, 9 secondsmission we would set up what's called a checkpost which is a checkpoint that is
20:1620 minutes, 16 secondssituated uh at a major intersection at checkpoints we would
20:2320 minutes, 23 secondsstop people create a traffic jam check their IDs check their trunks every day on their way to work or
20:3220 minutes, 32 secondson their way to visit their family to keep them on their toes
20:3920 minutes, 39 secondsessentially and they being
20:4520 minutes, 45 seconds[Music]
20:4620 minutes, 46 secondsPalestinians even though Israel was a central part of everything we did in
20:5320 minutes, 53 secondsschool we never really discussed the pales
21:0321 minutes, 3 secondsIans it was presented to us that Israel was basically an empty Wasteland when the Jews arrived there
21:1221 minutes, 12 secondswere some Arabs there they said but there was no organized people they had really treated the land
21:1921 minutes, 19 secondspoorly yeah there are there are Palestinians and they just want to kill us all and want us to leave the land
21:2821 minutes, 28 seconds[Music]
21:3121 minutes, 31 secondsI I just don't think I had any conception of anything about what it means to be a Palestinian besides that
21:3721 minutes, 37 secondsit means that you're a person who kills Jews or wants to kill Jews it was always presented to us that
21:4721 minutes, 47 secondsthe Arabs only know terrorism ever since I came back from
21:5621 minutes, 56 secondsthe states I I realized that the best way to help people understand the reality imposed on us by the state of
22:0322 minutes, 3 secondsIsrael is for them to be
22:0522 minutes, 5 seconds[Music]
22:0722 minutes, 7 secondsthere the one thing that I want to give the rest of my life for is to help people understand the reality that is going on in
22:1622 minutes, 16 secondsPalestines I grew up all of my life in this occupation I grew up in Bethlehem in
22:2522 minutes, 25 secondsPalestine to be honest I do have my days where I wake up up and look in the mirror and ask what is going on and and what can I even do today to change
22:3322 minutes, 33 secondsanything in the situation I remember from the youngest age growing up with my parents always
22:4022 minutes, 40 secondswarning me always telling me not to go out not to go in the street not to play on the street because of the soldiers and the settlers of course like your
22:4822 minutes, 48 secondsfirst experience with a soldier is terrorizing you know especially because they would invade
22:5522 minutes, 55 secondsyour house or your family's house late at night like AB they love to work after midnight my first experience with with
23:0323 minutes, 3 secondssoldiers as a child was an experience that put fear uh in
23:1023 minutes, 10 secondsme an American Jewish Soldier talking to my father and yelling at him and shouting at him which of course as a
23:1723 minutes, 17 secondschild you feel very ashamed and insulted and then my father because ironically we are American citizens as well turned to
23:2623 minutes, 26 secondshim in an American accent and asked asked him where he was from and then the soldier was almost like shocked by this
23:3323 minutes, 33 secondsby this question uh because for his mind you know he wants to say Israel and Jewish people but he's talking to an American now and he told him like from
23:4123 minutes, 41 secondsChicago and then just this this reality that like even as a child I remember this this this American soldier who just
23:4923 minutes, 49 secondsmoved here to be part of an army to play Cowboys and Indians somebody who comes here from New
23:5523 minutes, 55 secondsYork or from Chicago and claiming that this land is theirs what makes like an 18 years old
24:0424 minutes, 4 secondsAmerican kid who was given 10 days trip for free in Palestine what made them
24:1224 minutes, 12 secondswant to come in and sacrifice his life why would a foreigner think it's okay to have Superior rights to the rights of the
24:2124 minutes, 21 secondsindigenous population because somebody told them it's home
24:2824 minutes, 28 secondsThis Is Our Land This Is Ours that's what was conveyed to
24:3524 minutes, 35 secondsus it got to hit me that people look at Palestinian Palestinians from the point of view of the
24:4424 minutes, 44 secondsoppressor not from the point of view of the oppressed I think what I knew
24:5224 minutes, 52 secondsabout who was in Israel before the state was created is basically there were some Jews always there most Jews were in Exile we'd
25:0025 minutesalways yearned to go back the idea that there were Native
25:0925 minutes, 9 secondsinhabitants that lived there was not even part of my frame of reference
25:2525 minutes, 25 seconds[Music]
25:4625 minutes, 46 seconds[Music]
25:5525 minutes, 55 secondsthis restaurant makes the most delicious hus and ffu in
26:0326 minutes, 3 secondstown the family is not from the town of Bethlehem just like my mother's family they were expelled from the city of FFA back in
26:1326 minutes, 13 seconds1948 I was born to a family of victims of the ethnic lending of
26:2126 minutes, 21 secondsPalestine the ethnic L that was carried out by the founders of the state of Israel my mother's family were expelled
26:3026 minutes, 30 secondsfrom the largest Palestinian City pre1 1948 which was the city of
26:3726 minutes, 37 secondsyaat my father was a newborn at that time he was carried by his family they ended up in Bethlehem waiting for the
26:4626 minutes, 46 secondsatrocities to come to an end so they would be able to go back home of course none of those people were
26:5426 minutes, 54 secondsever allowed back home my father's family was in Jerusalem up
27:0127 minutes, 1 seconduntil 1948 When The War happened he was shot by a sniper and was killed on the spot
27:0927 minutes, 9 secondsuh his children actually dragged his body down and buried it in the courtyard of the house a few days later when the Jewish forces took over that
27:1827 minutes, 18 secondsneighborhood uh they demanded that all the non-jews of that neighborhood be evicted
27:2927 minutes, 29 secondsit was the biggest Mass Exodus percentage wise of a people from their land in modern
27:3627 minutes, 36 secondshistory the ethnic lending of Palestine the term neba the
27:4427 minutes, 44 secondscatastrophe is the tragedy or catastrophe that hit almost every single Palestinian family nearly 750,000
27:5427 minutes, 54 secondsvictims is traumatizing in almost every possible level
27:5927 minutes, 59 seconds[Music]
28:0628 minutes, 6 secondsnearly 78% of the land of Palestine became under the control of the state of
28:1428 minutes, 14 secondsIsrael what else was I told about Israel we were told it was a land without a people for people without a land and we
28:2228 minutes, 22 secondscame back from the ashes of the Holocaust the state of Israel was burn
28:3028 minutes, 30 secondsbirthed the rights of the people that lived here does not exist in that narrative and other than us being an
28:3828 minutes, 38 secondsobstacle the NBA continues it started in 1948 and continues until this
28:4628 minutes, 46 seconds[Music]
28:5128 minutes, 51 secondsday in 1967 the state of Israel managed to complete its control over Palestine by
28:5928 minutes, 59 secondstaking over the territory of the West Bank and the territory of
29:0329 minutes, 3 seconds[Music]
29:0629 minutes, 6 secondsGaza okay here's the good stuff more maps of Greater Israel that's just sort of you know the
29:1429 minutes, 14 secondswhole land we're always taught that the whole land was ours I mean you know that's sort of what they teach
29:2329 minutes, 23 secondsyou after the 1967 war Israel put a very forceful very violent
29:3229 minutes, 32 secondsmilitary force to dominate and control the lives of the Palestinians that continues until this
29:4429 minutes, 44 seconds[Music]
29:5429 minutes, 54 secondsday the intention of Israeli control over the land of Palestine is complete
30:0230 minutes, 2 secondscolonization of the territory building homes for those who were born to Jewish
30:1130 minutes, 11 secondsfamilies and also demolishing the homes of those who were born for Palestinian
30:2030 minutes, 20 secondsfamilies Palestinians kicked out from their homes confiscated by settlers you are stealing money my house and if I
30:2930 minutes, 29 secondsdon't steal it someone else is going to steal it no no one is allowed to steal it a massive movement to confiscate land
30:3730 minutes, 37 secondsto build settlements to expand settlements before we were even fully trained we were deployed to protect
30:4630 minutes, 46 secondssettlements it was all for the security of the settlements
30:5130 minutes, 51 seconds[Music]
30:5830 minutes, 58 secondsIsrael filled the occupied West Bank with Jewish Israelis living in different colonies and settlements throughout the
31:0531 minutes, 5 secondsregion and those individuals are subject to Israeli civil law while you have Palestinians living within the exact
31:1231 minutes, 12 secondssame territory that are subject to an Israeli military
31:1531 minutes, 15 seconds[Music]
31:1831 minutes, 18 secondslaw when an American citizen comes here he has more
31:2431 minutes, 24 secondsrights than I would have my entire
31:2831 minutes, 28 seconds[Music]
31:4531 minutes, 45 secondslife we are in the quote unquote West Bank we're in the quote unquote settlements this is one of the
31:5431 minutes, 54 secondsroadblocks that kind of ensured that the cars get checked to see that no terrorists are coming
32:0332 minutes, 3 secondsin I lived in America and then I came back to Israel by myself at the age of 17 to serve in the Army and there are elements what I would
32:1232 minutes, 12 secondscall the jihadist elements that don't accept our presence here but they'll It's just tough for them it's a great vision coming to fruition in our time
32:2032 minutes, 20 secondsand there's nothing going to stop us
32:2632 minutes, 26 seconds[Music]
32:3832 minutes, 38 secondsfrom the day you are born you live in day in day out day in day out without experiencing a day of
32:4832 minutes, 48 secondsFreedom Palestinians have to be forced to live in cages
32:5832 minutes, 58 secondsso I um I'm Israeli born and raised as a young Israeli growing up my grandparents lived in the center of
33:0733 minutes, 7 secondsJerusalem the battle for Jerusalem at least 26 people are reported dead people I knew were injured and
33:1633 minutes, 16 secondskilled and from a very young age I knew I'm going to be joining the military I was never in a Palestinian
33:2533 minutes, 25 secondshouse till I barge into one in the middle of the
33:3133 minutes, 31 seconds[Music]
33:3533 minutes, 35 secondsnight one of the things that I did routinely was a mission where you are ordered to take over a Palestinian
33:4233 minutes, 42 secondsfamily's home and use that house as a military point no warrant you don't call
33:4933 minutes, 49 secondsin advance it's a military occupation and during my service there were many moments where I saw myself acting
33:5833 minutes, 58 secondsviolently and there were moments of um of
34:0834 minutes, 8 secondsshame we can detain any Palestinian just because he looked at us in the wrong way
34:1534 minutes, 15 secondsthat's a system that's based on violence oh what are you
34:2134 minutes, 21 secondsdoing it
34:3234 minutes, 32 secondswe have a security matter you know security it's about security is this security I don't know we'll see this is a threat for you you don't know
34:4034 minutes, 40 seconds[Applause]
34:5034 minutes, 50 secondsyet when I was stationed in the West Bank one day one of my commanders came and grabbed me and one other Soldier and
34:5734 minutes, 57 secondssaid there is a detainee at the haa checkpoint and we need to go pick him up
35:0435 minutes, 4 secondsand bring him to the Detention Center that's in the base when we got there the Palestinian
35:1135 minutes, 11 secondsdetainee who was maximum in his early 20s was sitting on the curb with his
35:1835 minutes, 18 secondshands tied behind his back with zip ties and blindfolded we got to the Detention
35:2635 minutes, 26 secondsCenter within the Bas and right outside there were about eight soldiers waiting for us they saw us come they grabbed the
35:3635 minutes, 36 secondsdetain from our hands and threw him to the ground while he's still blindfolded in hands tied behind his back and they
35:4435 minutes, 44 secondsstarted kicking him for a good few minutes I was responsible for this man's
35:5635 minutes, 56 secondswell-being I was responsible to bring him from the checkpoint to the Detention Center that was my job and right outside
36:0536 minutes, 5 secondsthe fence of the Detention Center they grab him from me and they start beating him
36:1136 minutes, 11 secondsI I felt responsible but my commander wasn't saying anything so how could I say
36:1936 minutes, 19 secondsanything the entire time that this was happening a military police officer was standing just inside the fence watching
36:2736 minutes, 27 secondsand smoking a cigarette as soon as these guys were done kicking this Palestinian man the
36:3636 minutes, 36 secondsmilitary police officer tossed his cigarette he came brought him inside the detention
36:4336 minutes, 43 seconds[Music]
36:4536 minutes, 45 secondscenter and I didn't even speak up I didn't speak
36:5236 minutes, 52 secondsup and that's just one of many stories uh that I have from my time in the West
36:5836 minutes, 58 seconds[Music]
37:0237 minutes, 2 secondsBank it took many years for me to really come to terms with my part in
37:1137 minutes, 11 secondsit only after I got out of the army did I begin to realize that the stuff that I
37:1937 minutes, 19 secondsdid in the daytoday just working in checkpoints patrolling Villages that in
37:2437 minutes, 24 secondsand of itself was immoral Palestinians in the West Bank even
37:3237 minutes, 32 secondsthough their lives are controlled by the state of Israel from morning noon and night are not even theoretically citizens of the country in which they
37:4137 minutes, 41 secondslive you see in some ways what non-democracy looks like up close when people look at the West Bank
37:5037 minutes, 50 secondstoday and say this is an apartheid system it's not just throwing out a word a Palestinian lives under a different legal system than an Israeli
37:5937 minutes, 59 secondssettler living next
38:0038 minutes[Music]
38:0738 minutes, 7 secondsdoor give me my anyone who you know sees these facts
38:1538 minutes, 15 secondson the grounds or speaks to Palestinians would understand that this is a process of settler colonization of an aparti
38:2338 minutes, 23 secondsregime I remember Crossing that checkpoint into Bethlehem and before this I had been very much opposed to ever using the word AP partide but
38:3138 minutes, 31 secondsseeing the sort of Night and Day difference just by Crossing this wall changed that for me in an
38:4138 minutes, 41 seconds[Music]
38:5038 minutes, 50 secondsinstant serving in serving in the Israeli Army is obviously one way of supporting Israel but there's also
38:5738 minutes, 57 secondsanother modern battle that is happening on campuses each and every single day and you are standing in the front of it
39:0539 minutes, 5 secondsand um I mean the Israeli government Israeli people thank you for that and that's why
39:1239 minutes, 12 secondsthey put me here probably and I thank you for that so we need PR you uh there's a lot of PR to be
39:2039 minutes, 20 secondsmade this University thank God is fairly apolitical but I've heard all over the
39:2839 minutes, 28 secondsplace how universities are these hot beds of anti-Semitic and anti-israel
39:3839 minutes, 38 secondswork I remember very vividly I was sitting in my dorm room with a friend of mine we got a phone call that an anti-israel bill was being introduced in
39:4639 minutes, 46 secondsthe student government we bolted on the way called our parents both got sent talking points
39:5739 minutes, 57 seconds[Music]
39:5939 minutes, 59 secondsand then we went into this Student Government
40:1440 minutes, 14 secondsmeeting everybody pleas take the student Senate at the University of California Berkeley
40:2240 minutes, 22 secondscalling on campus officials to divest from companies that Supply weapons that Israel uses and occupation of the Palestinian territories you are siding
40:3140 minutes, 31 secondswith the Palestinians on the Israeli Palestinian conflict there's just no question about it I just knew it was this bad thing that I had to fight it is
40:4140 minutes, 41 secondsanti-Semitism it is you are trying to make me feel marginalized on my own campus and I remember all of us going
40:4940 minutes, 49 secondswell uh you shouldn't boycott Israel because uh it's applying a devil standard and you shouldn't boycott Israel because it's unfair to single out
40:5740 minutes, 57 secondsis room please I beg of you I beg you please to have compassion and to
41:0541 minutes, 5 secondsremember that we are alienating students and I am devastated by spell I am a human being I still remember you have these
41:1441 minutes, 14 secondsPalestinian students who get up and said you know Jewish students you are crying about feeling silenced and
41:2241 minutes, 22 secondsmarginalized you know my aunts and cousins didn't sleep for weeks while bombs were falling overhead in Gaza what do you have to say to that if divestment
41:3041 minutes, 30 secondsis hostile then then where do we begin to describe the hostility of a military occupation I was thrown into all these
41:3841 minutes, 38 secondsconversations where people were throwing around all these words that i' had never heard before occupation settlements apartheid ethnic cleansing I just never
41:4741 minutes, 47 secondsheard anyone use any of these terms before I thought I knew so much about Israel but I didn't really know what anybody was talking about when they were
41:5541 minutes, 55 secondstalking about all these things I remember coming to Hillel and saying
42:0542 minutes, 5 secondswhy aren't we answering Palestinian students questions I felt really embarrassed by it because mostly I felt like we weren't
42:1242 minutes, 12 secondsdoing a good job refuting their arguments do we not have an actual counterargument besides like rockets
42:1942 minutes, 19 secondsdouble standard anti-Semitism I people people I I couldn't get an answer for anybody and
42:2742 minutes, 27 secondsthat was really disturbing for me I mean there are these people called Palestinians who think that Israel
42:3442 minutes, 34 secondswields all this power over their lives and don't have rights don't have
42:4142 minutes, 41 secondswater what like literally what is this how is this happening how do I how do I respond to
42:4842 minutes, 48 secondsit people that have a problem with Israel there's a good chance they're misguided somewhere or another everyone
42:5642 minutes, 56 secondshave the freedom in isra is like you can have any religion you could do whatever you want in Israel but only in Israel in the Middle East a lot of like it's a lot
43:0543 minutes, 5 secondsof it's a lot of misinformation some of it comes from misinformation some of it comes from
43:1143 minutes, 11 secondsignorance some of it comes from lies and it's very hard to deal with that in any kind of a of a positive way when they're
43:1843 minutes, 18 secondscoming from such a place of not understanding what the reality the situation when they just have this in their in their head all this
43:2543 minutes, 25 secondsmisinformation and all these lies I mean somehow Pro Palestinian has become pro-
43:3143 minutes, 31 secondssocial
43:3243 minutes, 32 seconds[Music]
43:3543 minutes, 35 secondsjustice I wanted to know answers from within my own community and nobody could answer those questions for
43:4143 minutes, 41 secondsme how is it that I am like the best the Jewish Community has to offer I've been through all the trainings all the programs and I don't know what the
43:4943 minutes, 49 secondsoccupation is I I don't know what the settlements are eventually it got to a point where I
43:5743 minutes, 57 secondsfound myself wanting answers to the questions the Palestinian students were asking and so it led me on a process of
44:0644 minutes, 6 secondstrying to go figure those things out for myself what is this thing that is so horrifying that you can't bear to let me
44:1544 minutes, 15 secondssee it the summer after my freshman year I
44:2344 minutes, 23 secondswent to Palestine and I knowing ly cross line for the first
44:4344 minutes, 43 seconds[Music]
44:4644 minutes, 46 secondstime I don't think I realized the extent to which what I would come to see on the ground would really Shock Me and horrify
44:5444 minutes, 54 secondsme so if you look at your map um we're standing again right before um is going to turn red just so we hear
45:0345 minutes, 3 secondswhere the soldiers are standing um so just look behind you guys this is a block of houses the people
45:1045 minutes, 10 secondsliving in all these apartments here were not allowed to walk on this main road so this was what like a a red Road a sterilized Road and imagine if you're family living here you can't open the
45:1945 minutes, 19 secondsfront door of your house and walk out I'm listening to Palestinian students talking about what it was like
45:2745 minutes, 27 secondsbeing beaten at a checkpoint and sitting down with a Palestinian family and hearing their story about being
45:3545 minutes, 35 secondsdisplaced by Israeli settlers and even when we fix the water
45:4345 minutes, 43 secondswells and and we try to cultivate the rainwater to come into the water wells even those things are being attacked by
45:5145 minutes, 51 secondsthe settlers either they throw throw stones in them or they throw chemicals in them or they throw dead animals in
45:5945 minutes, 59 secondsthe wells so he's saying first he welcomes you and you know thank you very much for
46:0646 minutes, 6 secondscoming especially because you're Jewish the area here is populated by
46:1346 minutes, 13 secondsPalestinian Farmers Supreme Court in Israel ruled that they're allowed to live in the caves that are here they're not allowed
46:2146 minutes, 21 secondsto build anything today the Civil Administration and the Army came and and demolished
46:2846 minutes, 28 secondssome of the tents here something is deeply wrong here and
46:3546 minutes, 35 secondsit's it's breaking my
46:3946 minutes, 39 seconds[Music]
46:4246 minutes, 42 secondsheart what we've been told is that the only way that Jews can be safe is if Palestinians are not safe
46:5046 minutes, 50 secondsand I guess the more I learned about that the more I came to see that
46:5846 minutes, 58 secondsas a lie so this is the checkpoint that
47:0847 minutes, 8 secondsdivides uh Jerusalem from Bethlehem Palestinians definitely cannot
47:1647 minutes, 16 secondsdrive on this road so you can see that we're basically driving with walls on both sides of us right now
47:4247 minutes, 42 secondsyou want to go to like the mro square or where do you want to go we're in your head
47:4847 minutes, 48 seconds[Music]
47:5547 minutes, 55 secondsman this is this is my

48:0048 minutesbarber
48:0348 minutes, 3 seconds[Music]
48:0448 minutes, 4 secondsspeci as someone who came to see Jerusalem or Tel Aviv as places that I should imagine as home I remember coming
48:1148 minutes, 11 secondsinto the West Bank for the first time and actually seeing this place as someone else's home this is a normal place where people are just trying to
48:1948 minutes, 19 secondslive their lives for me to get to Jerusalem I have to think of first of all having the
48:2748 minutes, 27 secondspermit getting to the checkpoint waiting in lines for the checkpoint getting to the soldiers at the checkpoint the soldier might do anything to me at that
48:3648 minutes, 36 secondspoint including sending me back and then crossing the checkpoint and then having to take public transportation I just the fact that I cannot drive right as a
48:4348 minutes, 43 secondsPalestinian I cannot drive in Jerusalem or anywhere in Israel right so we drove here today and and if I'm at home by 10:
48:5048 minutes, 50 secondsp.m. and I get caught on the other side then I could be detained I could lose my permit for good I could be put in prison
48:5848 minutes, 58 secondsI could be beaten up by soldiers who knows what will happen to me almost any rooftop you stand on in
49:0749 minutes, 7 secondsBethlehem you look one way or the other you will see a settlement built around
49:1549 minutes, 15 secondsyou I started coming here in 2010 I heard you speak to a group about anti-Semitism and inherited trauma and
49:2349 minutes, 23 secondsstarted thinking a lot about what it means to challenge my my community around the Deep ingrained traumas that
49:3049 minutes, 30 secondsare totally stopping us from any sort of movement on this issue my first learning experience was
49:3849 minutes, 38 secondsuh when I was invited to go to aitz on a bearing witness Retreat I actually say in alitz I
49:4649 minutes, 46 secondsdiscovered one of the main reasons why this conflict exists today which is this inherited trauma that exists in the Jewish
49:5349 minutes, 53 secondsCommunity where the feeling is that as we're always attacked we've always been attacked we will always be attacked and
50:0250 minutes, 2 secondstherefore the only way to maintain oursel is to create this very suppressive security mechanism that
50:1150 minutes, 11 secondswould prevent this from happening again I mean that's what I learned yeah that that's what I
50:2050 minutes, 20 secondsheard what what is important for many of the Israeli Jews and the Jews from around the world we talk to is is the
50:2750 minutes, 27 secondssimple recognition and acknowledgement of the story and that story is where the
50:3350 minutes, 33 secondshealing work begins to happen as an activist I think for many
50:4350 minutes, 43 secondsactivists what keeps us going is our ability to be able to look towards the future I I really believe that there is
50:5250 minutes, 52 secondsan emerging Awakening within the American Jewish community I've had even some American Jews who
51:0151 minutes, 1 secondcome here and they say we came to Israel and we left from
51:0951 minutes, 9 secondsPalestine for American just coming here and listening to us and hearing us and seeing our humanity and understanding that we are not just out sitting in
51:1851 minutes, 18 secondsbunkers planning the next attack against Israelis that we do have a desire to live in peace and to have our freedom and to they walk in our streets and they
51:2751 minutes, 27 secondseat in our restaurants and we I mean it's crazy that I have to say this that we are real human beings that just want to survive and live and like all other
51:3551 minutes, 35 secondspeople in this world the moment they see this and experience this for themselves it
51:4351 minutes, 43 secondscreates something in them it shifts something in them what they do with it when they go back it becomes their responsibility
51:5951 minutes, 59 seconds[Music]
52:0652 minutes, 6 secondsI came home and spoke out and I think initially it was very painful and shocking for a lot of
52:1352 minutes, 13 secondspeople I had friends from high school and from college who didn't know how to speak to me at the beginning because these conversations were forbidden for us growing
52:2252 minutes, 22 seconds[Music]
52:2452 minutes, 24 secondsup I've grown up very much as a product of this Mass mobilization across the community to ensure that young people
52:3352 minutes, 33 secondsstay engaged in pro-israel
52:3652 minutes, 36 seconds[Music]
52:3852 minutes, 38 secondspolitics for most people I know who actually took the time to see with their own eyes what was happening it very
52:4652 minutes, 46 secondsquickly challenges everything we've been taught it's very painful because it is
52:5352 minutes, 53 secondsso intimately bound up with the identity of the community there have always been Jews
53:0353 minutes, 3 secondswho have spoken out for Palestinian R and more and more people are willing to take off their blinders looking at this
53:0953 minutes, 9 secondsreality saying this is intolerable
53:1453 minutes, 14 seconds[Music]
53:1553 minutes, 15 seconds[Applause]

53:2053 minutes, 20 seconds[Applause]
53:2153 minutes, 21 seconds[Music]
53:3053 minutes, 30 secondsI continued to meet more and more young people like me who were having similar
53:3653 minutes, 36 secondsexperiences and it made me realize that I was part of a bigger story of something that was happening not just to
53:4353 minutes, 43 secondsme but to young people around the country we decided to bring the crisis
53:5153 minutes, 51 secondsof American Jewish support from Israel to the doorsteps of Jewish institutions to force that conversation in
54:0054 minutes[Music]
54:0654 minutes, 6 seconds[Music]
54:2454 minutes, 24 secondspublic uh first of all my friends at Apex stopped talking to me I've lost many childhood friends over
54:3254 minutes, 32 secondsthis also many friends have like come along politically with me over the years many in my family have also many in my
54:3954 minutes, 39 secondsfamily also deeply disagree with me every time I have protested outside
54:4854 minutes, 48 secondsof a Jewish communal event of some kind I have seen a friend a family friend a parent of a friend on the other side of
54:5454 minutes, 54 secondsthe barricade we're literally talking about parents and
55:0255 minutes, 2 secondschildren young Jews they go to the Jewish federations they go to the reform movement they go to their day schools
55:0955 minutes, 9 secondsand they say you mobilized me to be a a soldier for Israel but I had been
55:1755 minutes, 17 secondscompletely misled we are also in a moment when there is the possibility of of some kind
55:2455 minutes, 24 secondsof alternative I see it hundreds of times over and over again and those hundreds speak for
55:3155 minutes, 31 secondsthousands and they went to the Jewish camps and they went to the day schools and they went to the synagogue Hebrew
55:3955 minutes, 39 secondsSchools they're really really angry at the way they were educated and the way that they were indoctrinated uh about
55:4655 minutes, 46 secondsthese issues and justifiably so the indoctrination is so
55:5355 minutes, 53 secondssevere it's almost hard to have a conversation about it it's
56:0056 minutesheartbreaking it is heartbreaking our community right now has to Grapple with our
56:0956 minutes, 9 secondscomplicity and we want to welcome you to the
56:1256 minutes, 12 seconds[Music]
56:1656 minutes, 16 secondsJewish Jewish opinion is split some Jewish groups vocally oppose Israel's military policies more than a thousand
56:2556 minutes, 25 secondsJewish activists descended on Washington DC Sunday to protest APAC so we tell some of our more conservative brothers
56:3356 minutes, 33 secondsand sisters on the inside that you do not represent the best of the Jewish prophetic tradition and we here to Bear
56:4256 minutes, 42 seconds[Applause]
56:4356 minutes, 43 secondswitness it's a new day now and you got a number of young Jewish brothers and sisters who are undergoing moral and
56:5156 minutes, 51 secondsspiritual awakening they're deeply concerned about the suffering of Palestinians they come come from a people who have been hated but they
56:5856 minutes, 58 secondsdon't want to see the cycle of hate perpetrated even by Jews

57:0657 minutes, 6 secondsthemselves Israel it's been part of my life since early childhood within the Jewish Community oh
57:1557 minutes, 15 secondsthere's been a striking change and Israel is well aware of it human will and commitment can change
57:2457 minutes, 24 secondsthings my name is Talia this is the first time I am using my full real name um to stand in solidarity with
57:3357 minutes, 33 secondsPalestinians and I never thought in my life that I would be standing with this many Jews for Palestine I'm a
57:4057 minutes, 40 secondsrabbi as long as Palestinian lives are treated as disposable our house as a people is not in
57:5057 minutes, 50 secondsorder tomorrow we show up and we March foll the leadership of Palestinians
58:1158 minutes, 11 secondscongresswoman Rashida TI I am the only Palestinian American member of Congress now how many Palestinians have to die
58:2058 minutes, 20 secondsfor their lives to matter life under apartheid strips Palestinians of their human dignity
58:2758 minutes, 27 secondshow many more decades do they need to endure this subjugation before there is a shift in this unreasonable status quo and what would you
58:3558 minutes, 35 secondsrecommend I would recommend
58:3858 minutes, 38 seconds[Music]
58:4058 minutes, 40 secondsFreedom the real challenge is trying to keep that moral and spiritual Dimension

59:5759 minutes, 57 secondsthink they represent much I think they're a little super naive I think the most American Jews even though they have
1:00:041 hour, 4 secondsdifferent views on settlements or occupation I think that's still a decision at the end of the day they're going to leave for the Israelis to make
1:00:121 hour, 12 secondsas long as Israel is under threat and as strong as it is and as dynamic as it is
1:00:201 hour, 20 secondsit's still under threat from its neighbors and a 100,000 missiles we
1:00:261 hour, 26 secondspostpone that philosophical debate to another
1:00:341 hour, 34 seconds[Music]
1:00:401 hour, 40 secondstime Palestinians are so dehumanized in the community that it's really hard for people to figure out how
1:00:481 hour, 48 secondsto even understand Palestinians legitimate rights and claims to the land
1:00:561 hour, 56 secondsPalestinians gathered for protest as the Israeli Gaza border they're demanding the right to return to lands from which they were forced out in
1:01:051 hour, 1 minute, 5 seconds1948 at least 55 Palestinians died Monday during mass protests Israeli troops fired on the
1:01:131 hour, 1 minute, 13 secondsdemonstrators
1:01:271 hour, 1 minute, 27 secondslook at the more recent Gaza demonstrations ask yourself the question if the Mexicans stood at the border and
1:01:341 hour, 1 minute, 34 secondsMarch a million Mexicans or 20,000 Mexicans what would America do you know first it would try tear gas and then it would not and and eventually would have
1:01:431 hour, 1 minute, 43 secondsto shoot there are a lot of Jewish young people who see a Jewish establishment
1:01:511 hour, 1 minute, 51 secondsthat is racist that is nationalistic isra in the mid Middle East and not the Midwest so the neighbors are not necessarily the Jones
1:02:001 hour, 2 minutesor The Smiths I don't want war but it's been impos on us so we should do right and defeat the

1:02:201 hour, 2 minutes, 20 secondsalternative I've been involved in this work for about a decade I was seen as a face of this young
1:02:291 hour, 2 minutes, 29 secondsgrowing Jewish resistance to the American Jewish establishment it made perfect sense to me that Bernie would hire someone like
1:02:381 hour, 2 minutes, 38 secondsme as a Jewish Outreach coordinator within about 48 Hours of being on the campaign the attack started
1:02:461 hour, 2 minutes, 46 secondsrolling in these old men from the Jewish establishment came out to say you know
1:02:551 hour, 2 minutes, 55 secondsthat I was Danger dangerous that I was a threat a journalist wrote an article about me the headline was Bernie Sanders
1:03:031 hour, 3 minutes, 3 secondsnew Jewish Outreach coordinator is an outspoken critic of Israeli
1:03:071 hour, 3 minutes, 7 seconds[Music]
1:03:111 hour, 3 minutes, 11 secondsoccupation the next headline that I found out about when I walked into work was Abe foxman calls on Sanders to fire
1:03:181 hour, 3 minutes, 18 secondsnew Jewish Community liaison for quote anti-israel comments on Thursday the Sanders campaign susp ended its new National
1:03:271 hour, 3 minutes, 27 secondsJewish Outreach coordinator Simone Zimmerman two days after she was
1:03:351 hour, 3 minutes, 35 secondshired so as far as I'm aware this was Abe foxman's first comment in public since his retirement from the ADL and uh
1:03:441 hour, 3 minutes, 44 secondshe came out of retirement to defend the world from the great threat of Simone Zimmerman it hurts me for a Jewish kid
1:03:531 hour, 3 minutes, 53 secondsto stand up there and say just for the Palestinians are not saying Justice for the Israelis troubles me hurts me bothers me
1:04:021 hour, 4 minutes, 2 secondsmeans we failed we failed and educating and explaining Etc when we talk about we're losing the
1:04:121 hour, 4 minutes, 12 secondskids we're not we lost them Birthright participant staged a protest walk out five of us will be
1:04:201 hour, 4 minutes, 20 secondsleing to learn about the occupation um from the perspectiv of Palestinians and than you you cannot be a tyrant on this
1:04:291 hour, 4 minutes, 29 secondsbus get off the bus recording for this reason they're recording for this
1:04:391 hour, 4 minutes, 39 secondsgetap we're seeing that uh many Millennials are becoming dis disenchanted with
1:04:451 hour, 4 minutes, 45 secondsIsrael and um I take a very different approach on this I say to them we need to love Israel even
1:04:521 hour, 4 minutes, 52 secondsmore birth that's our plan no free trip
1:05:001 hour, 5 minutes[Music]
1:05:041 hour, 5 minutes, 4 secondsonen it it means that we who are the older generation have much more work to
1:05:101 hour, 5 minutes, 10 secondsdo this whole communal obsession with defending Israel has basically warped into seeing someone like me as a threat
1:05:191 hour, 5 minutes, 19 secondsto the community the word that I used to hear a lot was self-hating Jew
1:05:261 hour, 5 minutes, 26 secondslike the only way that a Jewish person could possibly care about the humanity of Palestinians is if you hate
1:05:381 hour, 5 minutes, 38 secondsyourself let's see what I find in here you are a self-loathing Jew go kill
1:05:461 hour, 5 minutes, 46 secondsyourself with Jews like you who needs ignorant racist bigot Arabs you work against our people you're an
1:05:541 hour, 5 minutes, 54 secondsanti-semitic Jew you you've been working for the enemy Simone Zimmerman another member of The Lunatic anti-semitic
1:06:041 hour, 6 minutes, 4 secondsfarle there's always been this argument of oh you can't criticize Israel criticizing Israel feeds anti-Semitism
1:06:121 hour, 6 minutes, 12 secondscriticizing Israel helps the enemies of Israel as more and more American Jews are speaking out in support of
1:06:191 hour, 6 minutes, 19 secondsPalestinian Freedom now they just say instead we're overt anti-semites we hate all Jewish people or even worse that we're not
1:06:271 hour, 6 minutes, 27 secondsJewish at all we are attacked as being not really Jewish if we are not supportive of
1:06:341 hour, 6 minutes, 34 secondsIsrael and that's where you start seeing just the blanket delegitimization of an entire sector of American Jewish
1:06:421 hour, 6 minutes, 42 secondsSociety focusing on this so-called new anti-Semitism and then came the new anti-Semitism which was the
1:06:501 hour, 6 minutes, 50 secondsanti-Semitism relating to Israel what what some have said the Israel became the Jew of the Nations uh in the same
1:06:581 hour, 6 minutes, 58 secondsway that historically you know whatever was permitted for everybody else was not permitted for the Jew now Israel was
1:07:061 hour, 7 minutes, 6 secondssingled out so many of the self-appointed leaders of our community have been trying to equate the idea of supporting
1:07:141 hour, 7 minutes, 14 secondsPalestinian rights itself with anti-Semitism this is about anti-israel anti-semitic attitude classic new
1:07:221 hour, 7 minutes, 22 secondsanti-Semitism the extreme left has a long history of anti-Semitism of of anti-israel hatred how stupid have they
1:07:301 hour, 7 minutes, 30 secondsbeen for all these years voting for Obama and other anti-semites like him unwillingness to Grapple with
1:07:391 hour, 7 minutes, 39 secondsPalestinian suffering is putting a lot of American Jews in a really dangerous and sad
1:07:461 hour, 7 minutes, 46 secondsposition how far will Jewish Americans go in the effort to quash pressure on
1:07:531 hour, 7 minutes, 53 secondsIsrael you know how far will people go it's hard to see how far they won't go if this is where things are
1:08:041 hour, 8 minutes, 4 secondstoday at the end of the day pro-israel leaders want to be in the room with the people in power they will do anything to preserve
1:08:141 hour, 8 minutes, 14 secondsunconditional support for Israel thank you when I become president the days of
1:08:231 hour, 8 minutes, 23 secondstreating Israel like a SE second class citizen will end on day
1:08:321 hour, 8 minutes, 32 secondsone history is not going to judge us kindly I'd like to say that we were blessed by heaven with Donald Trump
1:08:421 hour, 8 minutes, 42 secondsbeing elected president of the United States we should pray that they should remain in office and that he should continue to do the great things he does
1:08:511 hour, 8 minutes, 51 secondson behalf of the United States of America and on behalf of Israel
1:08:551 hour, 8 minutes, 55 seconds[Music]
1:08:571 hour, 8 minutes, 57 secondswe're seeing like a horrifying culmination of what support of Israel at all costs has led to disregarding any lesson of History
1:09:061 hour, 9 minutes, 6 secondsdisregarding any sort of
1:09:081 hour, 9 minutes, 8 seconds[Music]
1:09:121 hour, 9 minutes, 12 secondsmorality the great irony of having this be where we are today within the Jewish Community is that there actually is
1:09:201 hour, 9 minutes, 20 secondsresurgent anti-Semitism the kind that I think my generation and the generations that have after me never thought we'd see in our
1:09:291 hour, 9 minutes, 29 secondslifetimes hail Trump hail our people hail victory in the US couple of things have
1:09:371 hour, 9 minutes, 37 secondsbeen happening and then we we'll go to Trump but Trump isn't it's not question is he a bigot isn't I don't think he's a bigot I think he is what he is I don't
1:09:451 hour, 9 minutes, 45 secondsthink he's a racist I don't think he's an anti-semite I think you can call them all kinds of
1:09:521 hour, 9 minutes, 52 secondsthings the community has spent so much time attacking anyone who criticizes Israel
1:09:591 hour, 9 minutes, 59 secondswhen they're actual threats to our community that's LED our communal institutions to basically be silent in
1:10:071 hour, 10 minutes, 7 secondsthe face of rising white nationalisms will not replace us will not replace
1:10:151 hour, 10 minutes, 15 secondsUSS will not replace us the way that we talk about anti-Semitism isn't about protecting Jews it's about protecting
1:10:231 hour, 10 minutes, 23 secondsIsrael how dangerous is that at this moment with the rise of
1:10:321 hour, 10 minutes, 32 secondsanti-Semitism and often when American politicians are asked about anti-Semitism they talk about their
1:10:401 hour, 10 minutes, 40 secondssupport for Israel support for Israel today is actually replacing what it means to be a
1:10:491 hour, 10 minutes, 49 secondsJew these people have basically decided that support for Israel is more important than the safety of
1:10:571 hour, 10 minutes, 57 secondsJews we're not going to say anything about the spreading of these anti-semitic conspiracy theories we have seen a tremendous
1:11:051 hour, 11 minutes, 5 secondsamount of this use of vile anti-semitic tropes the thread talks about a Jewish plot to enslave people in the United
1:11:131 hour, 11 minutes, 13 secondsStates anti-semitic flyers steeped in covid-19 conspiracies saying every single aspect of the co agenda is Jewish
1:11:221 hour, 11 minutes, 22 secondsthat's the way the Jews work they're they are deceivers they plot they lie they do
1:11:301 hour, 11 minutes, 30 secondswhatever they have to do the gunman told a SWAT officer that
1:11:401 hour, 11 minutes, 40 secondshe wanted all Jews to die and that they were committing genocide against his people
1:11:471 hour, 11 minutes, 47 seconds[Music]
1:11:581 hour, 11 minutes, 58 secondsit's a profoundly sad moment and I think it's a tipping moment these anti-semitic nightmares
1:12:071 hour, 12 minutes, 7 secondsthat we all like it's all coming to life in front of our eyes I can't help but think about all
1:12:161 hour, 12 minutes, 16 secondsthe American Jewish organizations that have spent the last decade pouring millions of dollars into smearing and
1:12:241 hour, 12 minutes, 24 secondsmarginalizing human rights Advocates Jewish Palestinian and not trying to Brand
1:12:311 hour, 12 minutes, 31 secondsPalestinian protest as anti-semitic when there were neo-nazis trying to kill us in our
1:12:401 hour, 12 minutes, 40 seconds[Music]
1:12:441 hour, 12 minutes, 44 secondssynagogues my parents and grandparents generation grew up in a world in which Jews were not
1:12:511 hour, 12 minutes, 51 secondssafe they invested so much in the idea that Jews could only be safe through
1:12:591 hour, 12 minutes, 59 secondsIsrael but our safety and our security is actually bound up in the safety and
1:13:061 hour, 13 minutes, 6 secondsthe security of all people the most powerful pro-israel Lobby in the country are now donating money to Republican
1:13:141 hour, 13 minutes, 14 secondspoliticians who either incited or continue to support the riers who
1:13:211 hour, 13 minutes, 21 secondsstormed the capital on January 6th that's part of a politics of
1:13:291 hour, 13 minutes, 29 secondssolidarity and it feels totally morally coherent and morally urgent to support freedom and dignity for all people in
1:13:361 hour, 13 minutes, 36 secondsall the places that we live Palestinians have already been
1:13:431 hour, 13 minutes, 43 secondstelling us this for decades so guys here's the the world but
1:13:511 hour, 13 minutes, 51 secondsthe world is finally coming to catch up to continue the building in this for me I would say if anybody has
1:14:011 hour, 14 minutes, 1 secondany influence on Israeli policy and I say this with a big F it is the American Jewish
1:14:071 hour, 14 minutes, 7 secondsCommunity the American Jewish Community have the potential to have the greatest influence in shifting our reality
1:14:151 hour, 14 minutes, 15 secondsoutside of this land for many people around the world when they see the voice of the Jewish Community rise and protest
1:14:231 hour, 14 minutes, 23 secondsagainst this occupation it will allow other voices to say yes we could also have a voice in it as
1:14:301 hour, 14 minutes, 30 secondswell now we're doing joint work in trying to end this occupation and bringing peace and Justice into this land the most
1:14:391 hour, 14 minutes, 39 secondsinspiring experiences I had are with Jewish Americans that come in and take a

1:14:561 hour, 14 minutes, 56 secondsto quote unquote break the silence and I'm interested was there a particular moment that led you to
1:15:021 hour, 15 minutes, 2 secondsthis in 2008 I I joined the military in America we have this concept of innocent until proven guilty there is no innocent

Thanks for that. I am a Palestinian-American, and, unfortunately, because of the genocide, I don't really feel that we're viewed as human or equal by the government. Of course, millions of good fellow Americans. The messaging and the policies need to change. Why should we be less than?

@QUINTUSMAXIMUS I knew very little about Palestinians or Israelis a year ago, just that there was always conflict, now I know the history of the apartheid invaders. Youtube says no hate speech so I can only say I feel the total opposite about Israelis as opposed to the heartfelt ❤ love and respect I have for the Palestinian people. My heart is truly broken 💔 for what is happening in Gaza and for all the Palestinian people who deserve soooo much more than they have got. Honestly, Palestinians can hold their heads high, they are better human beings than their oppressors. ❤ From a kiwi watching from New Zealand 🇳🇿 and praying everyday for your freedom ❣🇸🇩🕊

My daughter received an offer to go to Israel for free from a Jewish/Israeli organization at her high school. They offer this so that participants speak positively about Israel when they return to the U.S. Imagine if a saudi arabian or qatari orgnizatio does the same.

The story Simone was told about the Palestinian people is literally what I was told by my parents. "They didn't own the land, they just settled there, they were peasants that hadn't built anything of importance until the jews arrived, ..." I also felt sick watching this, I was born in Israel but I grew up in Belgium where I still live. I had never heard of the Nakba and the expulsion of 750.000 Palestinians until after October 7th. I also feel this communal shame and anger of being lied to all my life. I'm glad this documentary exists, so many jews all over the world are waking up.

what do you think about this:
in 1948 arabs ethnically cleansed the jews from Judea and Samaria
Palestinian law bans Jews from citizenship
Palestinian law makes selling land to jews punishable by death
Palestinian kids learns anti-semitism in school

is that not apartheid to you?
maybe apartheid to you is what israel is doing. that they have the iron dome and a wall to gaza and checkpoints. but do you know the reasons for this?
the checkpoints are there because there were literally terror attacks such as stabbing every single day in israel by people coming in from Gaza. the iron dome and wall is there because hamas were sending rockets into israel. arabs are allowed citizenships in israel and have high paying jobs like supreme judge for example. they are also allowed to practice whatever religion they want in israel as it is the only democracy in the middle east. how good of a democracy does Gaza have? oh none, because they voted for a terrorist organization on the first and only election they ever had.
maybe the reason why israel is an "apartheid state" is because hamas cant behave and cannot accept a thriving state of israel. maybe they should stop firing rockets and targeting civilians. maybe you should stop being antisemitic and realize that israel has the right to defend it semselves and that they SHOULD defend themselves against terrorism.

Learning about the Holocaust in the 90's as a kid and thinking at 8, "how could people be so naive and blind?!". As a middle aged adult watching the exact same horrors unfold at the hands of Isnotreal, broadcast live, without a half mention in media that doesn't victim blame the colonized men, women and CHILDREN of Palestine makes me dizzy. Zionists cry anti-semitism while saying the "only good Palestinian is a dead one" when confronted with a child sniped 6 times "in error". Absolutely disgusting.

Post script - 335 rounds were shot into the car Hind Rajab, 5 years old, was found dead in. Her 15 year old family member beside her called for help and was killed by a tank shooting at them next to the family's car. In front of Hind, after everyone else was dead. Two ambulance workers were also murdered by Isnotreal directly outside the vehicle. Canada, where I live, has spent $90million on munitions to support this genocide in the last nearly 3 years.

I became friends with the granddaughter of a holocaust survivor when I was 12yrs old. They had become Catholic post war. I joined the military in the 90's because I wanted to protect my country from people like the Nazi's. Now, I'm watching Israelis do the same wicked things but our governments are supporting them!! Anti-zionist Jews deserve so much respect. The courage it takes to challenge a deeply personal narrative that has been drilled into their heads since childhood (and then facing the deluge of threats, hatred, and violence) is immense. French citizen here with Palestinian wife and adopted Palestinian daughter. Uvi's entire family were killed when an Israeli missile attack destroyed their apartment block in 2018. Since last year my wife has lost seven family members (that we know of) three under five years old. I have lived and worked in Gaza.

This PERFECTLY sums up my unlearning deconstruction journey as a Jew who grew up as a classic traditional Zionist in Brooklyn. It hurts to know that I’m the only one in my family who’s actually putting in an effort to question what we’ve been told.

It’s like our great grandparents died in the Holocaust for nothing just so their descendants can join the IDF and commit the same atrocities that took their own lives. I was trained from a young age to glamorize Israel. It hurts to know that it’s all a lie. It hurts to know that I’m cut off from the rest of the community I was raised in. But it heals me to see that organizations such as IfnotNowWhen and JVP exist. People like Gabor Mate, Norman Finkelstein, Noam Chomsky, and Ilan Pappe are people that I look up to now and I think that they’re writings would help a lot of Jews start to deconstruct the indoctrination and propaganda.

This whole documentary is all too familiar to me and unfortunately I related to this a lot in a sick nostalgic way. I’m writing a thesis about my experience growing up like this and I’m going to be using this documentary as a source. Thank you for making this. Hope shall be restored.

One of my close friend is Jewish and at the beginning of Oct 23 she was the first person who said me: Im with Palestine, im with you. I defend Palestine and I defend too the difference between Zyonism and Judaism because at my work I have been accused fo antisemitism. Jewish against Israel and Zyonism are as Palestinian: Brave!!! Watching these young Jewish people come to the awareness of the brutality of the occupation and the lies they were told about  the regime they were brought up to support and opening up to the suffering of the Palestinians brings hope and healing to the profound sadness in my heart. It's very rare to see this side of the story, and I've never understood why.  Thank you brave, compassionate sisters and brother of the world.

For context, It’s estimated that approximately 4,000 to 5,000 Cherokee people died during the Trail of Tears. This forced relocation, which took place from 1838 to 1839, involved the displacement of approximately 16,000 Cherokee from their ancestral lands in the southeastern United States to designated Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). And this is called an atrocity of history.

So, when you hear 750,000 people the Palestinian Nakba displacement is equivalent to 47 Trail of Tears... This would be like having a Trail of Tears every year and a half from 1948 to today in 2024.....

It’s time to re-evaluate the influence of lobbying groups like AIPAC in our political system. While israeli citizens receive government-funded healthcare and social support, many Americans struggle with basic needs. U.S. foreign aid should be discussed transparently and aligned with our domestic priorities.

I'm italian and I'm aware of the Palestinians suffering since I was a child in the seventies. It's really very difficult for me to understand how American jews can be so brainwashed and ignore the unjustice committed by Israel against the palestinians , although many of them have been several times to Israel. I think that American Jews have the moral responsibility,  the moral duty to fight against the fascist Israeli regine, against the occupation, and for Justice for the palestinians.

my grandparents were resistant fighters during WWII, they hide jews in their house in the basement. Anne Frank house is just around the corner from where I live in Amsterdam. Anne wrote in her diaries she was so afraid of the zionists, she also wrote whe and her sister Margot wanted to go to Palestine to take care of the babies. Palestine she mentioned in her diary. You know, holland back than was extreme right, they worked together with the nazis, even our royals, they married all nazis. Not one word about the jews in Holland that got killed. Not one word.  Now we see why anne was afraid of the zionists, nothing more than a bunch of nazis.

Let's take a minute to acknowledge the enormous amount of courage these people had to summon first to reevaluate deeply-held beliefs, but secondly and most importantly, to profess them to the public, especially their own communities. This is admirable work, and I thank every Jewish person who's in support of Palestine for their stand - I know you've already sacrificed a lot merely by conveying what's in your heart.

In the heart of the olive groves, three palms stand tall,
Whispering stories of hope, through seasons they call.
Roots deep in the soil, where ancient dreams dwell,
They sway with the winds, in a soft, sacred spell.

Each leaf tells a tale of laughter and tears,
Of love that persists through the struggles and fears.
Underneath their shade, children dance and play,
In the warmth of their branches, troubles drift away.

Together they rise, through the storms and the sun,
A symbol of unity, their hearts beating as one.
In the land of resilience, where the spirit is free,
Three palms of Palestine, forever they'll be.

Free Palestine! 🇵🇸

This is where the change begins. Israelis will not change themselves.  Young American Jews will bring the change to their own community. It’s their turn now. God bless these kids in their fight for what is right and just!

Growing up in Zambia, a former British colony, my grand parents and great grand parents endured similar colonial oppression - had to live in segregated areas, could not own property, needed a Pass (ichitupa) permitting the to be in a 'European area', harassed and emasculated routinely - in the land their ancestors had lived in for hundreds of years.

The Israeli occupation is classic colonialism: ethnic segregation, ethnic oppression, ethnic cleansing, complete disenfranchisement.

At the same time, Jews have  experienced systemic, societal oppression, mistreatment, abuse and collective murder for a 1000 years.

How can Israel/Palestine be a safe homeland for Palestinians AND Jews - outside American foreign policy. That is perhaps the greatest question of our time.

I was raised to believe the narrative . Went to that country of my "birthright " just to realized that I felt  that  I was not from there at all. I am french , I am a Je:wish but I am European , my entire system refused to change and become a middle eastern. I couldn’t do that .
I came to realize that I have been trained to become something I am not . Deep inside I am not a home there .

Though not Jewish, as an American I found myself in a somewhat similar position as this filmmaker in the late 1970s, after the first Camp David summit. I sensed that my country was right smack in the middle of this issue, but had no idea why, except what I had often heard, that it was all so complicated that no one really knew what it was about. I decided it was my democratic duty to find out. In February 1982, I walked 200 miles through Israeli occupied Palestine during the month of February, reading my first three books about the history along the way, and meeting many Palestinians and Israelis along the way. I never stopped, and 43 years and about 125 scholarly texts read since then, I now absolutely understand the historical injustice. I consider knowledge...through reading and investigating...to be the absolutely essential step a person must take to cut through the Zionist/US propaganda narrative.

Actually the founder of zionism have suggested many countries other than Palestine but the British support in beginning was very strong because it served its intresset until the 1946 when they lost India and they lost interest in supporting zionism , however the evangelicals have always been the biggest supporter  and most important one until today, hoping a jewish state will fullfill their prophecy of the second coming. and for decades USA thought Isreal can play bigger roll in the ME and protects American interest. Unfortunately Israel is still dependent On US support but the AIPAC has already have control over us politicians and they can not abandon Israel now.

The root cause of all conflicts is the tendency of groups to separate themselves from the rest of humanity. Whether it's based on family, religion, nationality, or ideology, this impulse to divide and define ourselves by exclusive identities fosters misunderstanding, fear, and ultimately conflict. When people view themselves as distinct from others instead of recognizing our shared humanity, it creates an 'us vs. them' mentality. This division breeds distrust, competition, and hostility, undermining cooperation and empathy. True peace lies not in drawing boundaries but in dissolving them—embracing diversity while acknowledging our deep interconnectedness as human beings.

I have watched this documentary 3 times now. Before commenting, the guidance about respect that came up by Aljazeera makes me appreciate you more and more. This documentary was made before 7th October. I don't know what the future holds. What I do know is, the Jews are my cousins. Simon Zimmerman and all the people who spoke up are my cousins. It takes pure courage to speak up when you are not the majority and to have to risk your blood ties to speak the truth. I love and immensely respect you guys.
I pray Palestine is free and there are reparations by the West and Israel for the genocide of our brothers and sisters, and that all Palestinians get to walk in a free Palestine, without fear and breath the sigh of relief they have been holding since 1948. May we all live together in true liberation. Ameen. ❤️

I am canadian.  I am LDS and raised very pro-Isreal, after all, that is where Jesus was from.  I celebrated Jewish holidays, and dreamed of going to Israel.  I am sickened by what Israel is and has done.  No longer am I proud of the time I spent learning Hebrew, or for my insistance that we name all our kids Hebrew names.  No longer do I dream of going to Israel.  No longer do I plan on doing Grad school in Haifa.  What the state of Israel has done to the Palestinians is beyond horrendous.  Now I just want to go to Palestine.  I want to walk in the Gaza strip and meet the people who have lived through this awful occupation for so long.  I am grateful to know that zionism is not Judism

I was an American Zionist. My experience with wonderful,  hospitable, Palestinians shocked me. My only negative experiences were with Israeli Jews who lied to me, bullied and cheated me (in the Old City).
Visiting Palestine, though I was warned it was unsafe for me, was shocking.
Though the people were oppressed and abused, they were kind to me.

It made me examine what I had been taught. The Israeli “new historians” opened my eyes. It totally flipped my worldview.

Even our state-owned channel (obligated by law to be completely neutral..) is biased and show the Israeli propaganda (never in my life experienced Swedish media behave like this, it's shocking. The scariest part is that Swedish media is unconditionally trusted to be neutral in Sweden 😟) Sweden is currently transforming extremely fast towards USA, I'm definitely worried. 😞 Free Palestine, free Lebanon (and the whole world!) from this sick spiralling war agenda! ❤️ 🇸🇪

What I can’t understand is why the teacher that is so passionate about Israel doesn’t just give up her US citizenship to a Palestinian family and move to Israel? If I loved a place that much I would do everything I can to move and live there.

But this gives me great hope, especially in the face of such media censorship of anyone who supports Palestinians in this horrible time. Thank you again for your courage.

It doesn’t matter if you are Jewish, Christ or Muslim you are the same human, your religion doesn’t makes you better.
Israel has to stop feeling special and have to respect others too, like for example Germany, where I live. We live all kinds of religions and cultures here but we all live in peace and respect to each other, because we all have the same rights. And Israel have to change if it likes to be a country. Peace and love and respect for the humanity, please

This is a fantastic piece of film that should be an essential tool for learning and understanding the importance of education and context from all viewpoints, from kindergarten to the grave. Bravo and respect to all those contributors to the documentary who speak their truth about the realisation of their miseducation and betrayal by those 'teachers' they had no reason to question, until now. Thank you.

Please bring back Aljazeera  to British Freeview TV.  It's so important, I only came across this by chance on U Tube where it would've been on 235 Freeview. I can't bear not being able to see it on TV. This programme will help end the power of the wicked IDF, the young people will know the truth and will demand change and to stop the violence, tear down the walls and live in peace.

If the term "Educator" is preceded by the term for an ideology you're not an educator but an indoctrinator. Also gotta say that the pro-israel youth camps remind me of similar youth camps organized for German kids in the 20s and 30s.

Propaganda should never be underestimated. It touches us all in some ways but the most important thing to remember is every life is precious even those from other cultures. If you reach out you will find every human has more in common than they differ. So have empathy for the suffering of others because we are all brothers and sisters in creation no matter what God we worship or choose not to.

The great American Writer, James Baldwin once said, "the world is held together, really it is held together, by the love and the passion of a very few people. Otherwise, of course, you can despair." Nicole and Eitan are two of those people. Their courage to confront their own cultural lies and to speak up about them makes them rare individuals. Wouldn't it be nice if more of us could wake from our privileged dream and share a little compassion for other people.

I Don't think The Jews around the world  and especially in the US are doing enough, actually relative to what is happening they are not doing much.... They need to very very strongly oppose the genocide in Gaza and Lebanon... This would very much affect them, and their descendants in the long run since people around the world would not know the difference between being Jewish, Zionist, or Israeli...
